Today I’m sharing a pair of cards created with Spellbinders’ Press & Foil of the Month, Hibiscus Bloom. One of my favorite ways to stretch a design is to change up the background but use the same color palette. That’s exactly what I did with these two cards. And the best part? Both were super quick and easy to make!
The beautiful hibiscus image is the focal point of each card, and both were made using the BetterPress Letterpress System. By changing the background color, each one has its own personality.
I’m playing along with a Summer Flowers challenge, #639 at Fab n Funky Challenges.
White=Vibrant & Playful

For the first card, I paired the florals with a crisp white background. I inked the hibiscus plate with vibrant water-based ink colors of pink, lavender and purple. The sentiment was done in black ink. I added a purple cardstock strip down the left side, keeping the design very simple.
Black=Dramatic & Mysterious
For the second card, I took the opposite approach and placed the same floral arrangement onto some gorgeous paper that I had in my stash. The hibiscus plate was inked in black, trimmed with its coordinating die, and then adhered to a black card base. It’s amazing how much the mood changes! The rich backdrop makes the colors appear even more vibrant.

I foiled the sentiment onto the black card base, using the Glimmer Hot Foil System and Matte Silver Foil. I love how the Press & Foil plates work with both the glimmer and BetterPress systems, doubling their value in my craftroom.
Which is Your Favorite Hibiscus Bloom?
To make the set of cards feel cohesive, I used complementary colors throughout both cards. The coordinating palettes tie the designs together while the contrasting backgrounds showcase just how versatile the Hibiscus Bloom plate can be. It’s a great reminder that sometimes a simple change—like swapping white cardstock for black—can completely transform the look of a project.
Which version is your favorite: the fresh white background or the bold black one? Here’s another vibrant floral display on black from a previous post.
