Sometimes the best birthday cards are the ones that make you laugh, and these four cards definitely fit the bill!
I’m playing along with two challenges. The first is Time Out Challenge #315 where players pick 2 of the offered subjects. I’m going with summer and water.

The second challenge is from Make My Monday, #280, “Use a Stencil”, which is a perfect fit with today’s cards!
So let’s take a look!
I recently stenciled a variety of colorful backgrounds with Taylored Expressions Abstract Quads which I first shared in this post. I chose one of my stenciled background sets which were made using Distress Oxide Inks in Shabby Shutters, Peeled Paint, Tumbled Glass and Chipped Sapphire.
Next, I paired them with the adorable penguins from Pengu-tastic Holiday (sadly, they’re retired) by Alex Syberia Designs. These little guys are full of personality, and I couldn’t resist turning them into a set of humorous birthday cards. I can totally see the Hog Happy Day critters on another set of cards. 🙂
After stamping and die-cutting the images, I colored them in with Ohuhu Alcohol Markers.
A Coordinated Collection of Birthday Cards
I created each background with the same color combination, making this set of cards look like a coordinated collection. The bright colors and playful patterns were the perfect complement to the penguins’ silly summer antics.

Laugh Out Loud!
Of course, the real punchline comes from the sentiments. I paired the images with Riley & Co. Funny Bones sentiments, which are known for their witty humor and just the right amount of sass. Combined with the cheerful penguins, they create the perfect recipe for over-the-hill birthday cards that are sure to get a laugh.

If you’ve never checked out the Funny Bones series of stamps, I highly recommend doing so. You’ll be laughing out loud as you read through these hilarious sentiments, and laughter is SO GOOD for the soul!

One of my favorite things about making cards in sets is how easy it is to mix and match elements. By starting with four stenciled backgrounds and using the same stamp set and colors throughout, I was able to create four distinct designs in a relatively short amount of time. It’s a great way to build up your stash of birthday cards while still enjoying the creative process.
Finding Humor with Old Age
These cards are a reminder that birthdays don’t always have to be sweet and sentimental. Sometimes a little humor is exactly what’s needed, especially when those milestone birthdays start creeping up! Between the colorful backgrounds, the goofy penguins, and the hilarious sentiments, these cards are guaranteed to bring smiles to the recipients.

I used a boom box from Lawn Fawn’s Cheesy Christmas stamp set for this final card. I just love how it completes the “rock star” sentiment from Riley & Company!
I still have a stack of these stenciled backgrounds which I’ll be working my way through in the coming weeks. I hope you don’t get tired of seeing them, as I’m truly having a blast adding stamped or die cut images to each set. And if you want to get in on the fun, order a set of Quad stencils from Taylored Expressions and see what you can create!
After all, getting older is a lot easier when you can laugh about it!
Until next time,
~Krista
