Hello friends! Today I’m sharing a card that I made for my grandson who’ll soon be turning 11. He always has a pool party, so I know he’s going to make a splash on his birthday!
I’m playing along with several card challenges, which include Just Us Girls, Time Out Challenge, Pick 3 Challenge (I chose sequins, tropical, sunshine) & Seize the Birthday Challenge. Here are all of the inspirations and requirements:

All of the stamps that I used are from Sunny Studio Stamps so, let’s dive in!

Make a Splash with Waves
I used the Catch a Wave Dies (no longer available, but similar to these) to cut three wave panels from white cardstock, then brought them to life with Distress Oxide Inks in Tumbled Glass, Salty Ocean, Blueprint Sketch, and Black Soot. To create depth and plenty of contrast, I started with the lightest shade at the top and gradually blended darker blues into each lower wave, finishing with the deepest color at the bottom for a rich, layered ocean effect.
Adding Sunrays
Continuing on, I cut an A2 sized white panel as my card background and stenciled a sunny sky with Lawn Fawn’s Sun ray Background. I used Scattered Straw and Wild Honey Distress Oxide Inks to ink blend through the stencil. This panel was then glued to a folded white card base.
Once the sky was done, I trimmed down the wave panels and layered them into place. I made sure to leave a spot unglued so that I could tuck the swimming girl behind the wave.
Choosing the Children
I chose three swimming/floating kids from Beach Babies and Kiddie Pool stamp sets. After stamping and die-cutting each one, I colored them in with Ohuhu Alcohol Markers.
The balloons are from Floating By stamp set and were also colored with the alcohol markers. I wrote in “11” with a black marker for my grandson’s age.

Heat Embossing: Make a Splash!
Before adding the children to the card front, I stamped a sentiment using stamps from Kiddie Pool. It reads, “It’s your birthday! Make a splash!” and was stamped with VersaMark Ink, coated with white embossing powder and then heat set. Would you believe that when I started stamping 30 years ago, I used my stove top to heat set when embossing. NOT RECOMMENDED! I scorched many a card in the process!
Putting it All Together
Finally, it was time to add the floating children to the scene. I glued the girls into place and then popped up the boy and his balloons using foam tape. This makes him stand out more, since he’s the star of the day!
To comply with the Pick 3 Challenge, I added sequins and went a bit overboard, but I think my grandson will appreciate all of the sparkle!
Thanks for visiting today! For another pool themed card, check out my previous post: Cool Vibes.
