Making fall themed cards is one of my favorite things to do, so I was excited to make today’s card using some new products. This cute scarecrow is part of a new Hero Arts collection called Whimsical Wheels. It features an adorable automobile, Beep Beep (which looks a lot like a Volkswagon) and has a couple of accessory sets to fill it! From Santa to scarecrows, this release has everything you need to create seasonal cards.
Choosing colors with Color Cube

I recently splurged and bought the first two (out of 4) Color Cubes by Sarah Renee Clarke, giving me 500 color combinations to choose from. I love flipping through the color cards and finding my inspiration right out of the box! You can see which card I used in photo (#143), and how well it made everything turn out. I’m in love, *sigh*.
After selecting my color combo, I chose the following ColorWheel Cardstock colors:
- Tuscan
- Cinnamon
- Terra Cotta
- Celestial
- Indigo
- Alabaster
The background panel, a place to start
I started by pulling out my stack of embossing folders, looking for something with texture reminiscent of fall. I was thrilled when I saw the Market Weave Embossing Folder from the April Club at Spellbinders. Doesn’t it look like a straw bale, especially on the Tuscan ColorWheel Cardstock? I think it does!
After texturing the panel, I glued it to an A2 sized Alabaster card base.

Adding a wonky shaped panel
Next, I dug through my stash of patterned paper and found a lovely rust plaid piece that I die-cut with Playful Stitched Panels. There’s something about the stitched wavy edge that seems perfect for a scarecrow. It’s just a little bit wonky!
Making Mr. Scarecrow
With dies from the accessory set, Beep Beep Leaf Peeper, I stuck to my color combination and cut out the scarecrow. After piecing him together, I went in search of the perfect backdrop.

I ended up using the rectangle from Scalloped Frames which includes dies that coordinate with an embossing folder. I cut the scalloped portion from Indigo and the inner piece from Alabaster cardstock. This became the perfect spot for Mr. Scarecrow!
Fall Words
Keeping the sentiment simple, I used the BetterPress LetterPress System with Whimsical Wheels Fall Words. I used a dark brown ink pad, and the word “thankful” blends in perfectly. It was also the right size for the scarecrow to hold.

To finish the front, I die-cut some leaves from the Beep Beep Leaf Peeper set. After piecing them together, I scattered them across the card.
Opening the card
I recently made a commitment to myself, to always finish the inside of my cards, no excuses! It was something that I’d gotten lazy about, but not anymore!

I used the negative image piece, which was left over from the wonky shaped panel, and glued it onto the inside. I “BetterPressed” another sentiment from Fall Words, cutting it out with its coordinating die. It was then added to the center of the inside. Lastly, I scattered a few more of the leaves and today’s scarecrow card was finished!
In summary
While there are many parts of the Whimsical Wheels Collection that I did not use today, I think this simple card turned out quite well. I like taking one small component and creating a card around it. Here’s another one that I did in the same way: Frame a Card… I don’t know if I’d call it a technique or not, but do you ever use a small component on your cards?
Until next time, happy crafting!
