I’m excited to share today’s card because it represents Spellbinder’s June Clubs perfectly! This month is all about that Hawaiian Island magic and what could be better than a hula girl against a gorgeous evening sunset. Clubs are open to new subscribers today, June 6, and you’re going to want the All-Club Crate for sure, since that’s the only way to get the cute hula girl and her little sidekick, Penguin in Paradise.
Today’s card features three clubs:
- Clear Stamp/Die set: This Way to Rainbows
- Crate Exclusive Die: Aloha Hula
- Stitching Die set: Luau Beats
Let’s Make Some Island Magic
The Hinge Method:
I started with a non-club product, Arch Labels and Tag Dies, cutting the largest die three times from Classic White ColorWheel Cardstock. This would become the base for the card.
It was cut three times because I wanted to use the “hinge method” for my card base. I took some pictures of the process to help explain.
Step 1:
The first arch was placed on a scoring board so that the straight edge was against the left side of the board. I used a stylus to score through the arch at 4.5″.

Step 2:
Next, I added glue to the area above the score line, as shown, and then carefully placed the unscored panel over it. I rubbed it gently to get a good seal.

Step 3:
Once the glue was set, I carefully folded the panel at the score line. This would become the back of the card base.

Step 4:
After preparing the front panel by inking and embellishing, I glued it to the un-scored side of the card base. If that’s hard to remember (it is for me!) just realize that if you glue to the scored side, the front of your card will have a fold in it as well. Ask me how I know… :0

This creates an arch-shaped card that is fun, a little bit different and perfect for some island magic!

So, Let’s Get Back to the Details!
Before adhering the arch front to the card base, I ink blended with Distress Oxide inks in Wild Honey, Crackling Campfire and Seedless Preserves. These three colors created a rich, warm backdrop, reminiscent of an island sunset.

Using the Crate Exclusive Dies, Aloha Hula, I cut the dancer from the following selection of ColorWheel Cardstock:
- Fawn
- Raven
- Terra Cotta
- Bees Wax
- Waterfall
- Teal Topaz
- Oceanside
- Alabaster
She is simple to put together, and I quickly learned that her forearm goes on after the bikini top and lei! Her cheeks were cut from Alabaster cardstock and then colored with an Ohuhu Alcohol Marker.
Next, I used the Stitching Dies of the Month, Luau Beats, to cut out the drum from the following cardstock colors:
- Terra Cotta
- Cinnamon
- Saffron
- Alabaster
I stitched the drum with a dark brown DMC thread, #844. It’s important to note that the upper portion of the drum must be glued onto the drum base before stitching. The bottom portion gets pieced on after stitching.

Finishing…
After placing the dancer and drum on the card front, I chose a sentiment from This Way to Rainbows. It reads “Aloha, Sunshine” and was stamped in black ink on Alabaster Cardstock. I think this stamp set could work well with cards such as these: Scenes from the Ocean, don’t you?
I hope you’ve been inspired to try the hinge method in your card making, whether it’s an arch, a circle or any other shape! And if you find yourself loving this adorable hula dancer, then order the All-Clubs Crate as she’s an exclusive set. Don’t wait! I have a feeling this month could be a sell-out!
