I love using Ranger’s Distress Oxide Inks to blend beautiful backgrounds, and this time, I added Lakeside Memories Stencils into the mix. As part of Spellbinders Summer Camp Collection by Allison Frazier, these stencils help us create scenic backdrops, perfect for a day on the lake!
Using Distress Oxide Inks and Stencils Together
To make today’s card, I started with a white 5″ x 6″ panel and placed it onto a Waffle Flower Grip Mat and then ink blending in thirds using Tattered Rose, Dried Marigold and Lost Shadow Distress Oxide Inks. By using soft bristled blending brushes and smooth white cardstock, it’s easy to get a flawless look.

After applying the three ink colors, I went back with the Lakeside Memories Stencils and used the same inks again. I omitted the stencil that has a hillside and only added the tree line, water highlights and beach. By re-using the same ink colors, everything remains muted, soft and reminiscent of a misty summer morning.
Because distress inks are water reactive, I splattered the background panel with water and that dabbed off the excess with a tissue. I then splattered it with black and white paint to add a bit more texture and interest.
Create a Lakeside Scene Shaped Card
Next, I used the largest die from Perfect Touch Arches and Tag to cut from the ink blended panel. I love how these dies add a soft, detailed edge. This gives it a frame without actually framing it!
To make the card base, I die cut two of the largest Essential Arches and then used the “hinge method” to connect the two pieces. You can see pictures of how this is done here, and while the shape is a little different, you’ll get the idea. I’ve been using this technique a lot since purchasing the various arch dies, but it works for almost any shape!

Adding a Focal Point
Now that the scene was created, I needed a focal point, and I wanted great contrast against the soft misty backdrop. I decided that a black and white skunk would be the perfect critter and I die cut it with the Trailside Trio dies. Using only Raven and Classic White ColorWheel Cardstock, this little fella went together quickly. Isn’t he just the cutest?
Next, I cut the canoe and paddle for this lakeside card using dies from Splash Days. It was cut from Cranberry, Cinnamon and Acorn ColorWheel Cardstock. After positioning the canoe and skunk at the bottom of the card, I stamped a Summertime Sentiment and placed it at the top of the card.
Lakeside Memories for Any Occasion
This card could be used for any number of occasions including birthday, Father’s Day or “just because”! With this soft, misty lakeside scene along with its Trailside Trio skunk, what could be any cuter? Check out the Summer Camp Collection today!
