After enjoying Mindy Eggens Class Road Legends debut a year ago, I jumped at the chance for her newest additions! Her Classic Road Legends 2.0 is now available from Spellbinders, with two new cars, new sentiments and a scenic background stencil set. Today I’m sharing the Hot Rod Flames car and the stencils, Highway Horizons-Desert.
I am playing along with a challenge from A Cut Above Die Cut Challenge Blog, since I love creating with dies!

Let’s Make a Scene
I began with an A2 sized panel of Alabaster ColorWheel Cardstock. I wanted to create a backdrop with a sepia tone so that the bright colored car would really stand out against it.
Using the new stencil set, Highway Horizons-Desert, I ink blended with Tea Dye, Gathered Twigs and Ground Espresso Distress Oxide Inks. I think the sepia tone looks very “desert-y” and is perfect for this scene. I chose a sentiment from Cruisin’ By Sentiments and stamped it at the top of the panel with my favorite black ink, Memento Tuxedo Black.
While the stencils include some cacti, I opted to leave them out of the scene. Once I was done stenciling, I splattered some black and brown paint over the panel.

Making a Hot Rod Car
Next up, it was time to make the Hot Rod Flames car. I die cut the body from Waterfall and Teal Topaz ColorWheel Cardstock. I die cut the two parts of the flame from Pomegranate and Classic White and then ink blended the white with Mustard Seed, Dried Marigold and Lumberjack Plaid Distress Oxide Inks. The ink blended flame was then glued onto the larger Pomegranate flame.
The wheels were cut from Raven, Anchor, White and Silver. The headlights and grill were cut from white and silver, and the steering wheel was cut from Raven. The seat was cut from white and gently inked with Lost Shadow Distress Oxide Ink.
After piecing the car together using Spellbinders guide, I was ready to place it into the desert stenciled scene. Even though this die set has many pieces, it’s really not difficult to piece together. After you’ve made a couple, it becomes easier and quicker!
On a Dark Desert Highway
I don’t know why, but I kept singing Hotel California as I made this card. Maybe because we just went to a concert featuring an Eagles Tribute Band. But this “dark desert highway” card makes me happy and so, sing, I shall!
As planned, the bright colors really pop against the sepia toned scene. It’s always nice when a plan works the way you wanted it to, right?! I can’t wait to share more of this Classic Road Legends 2.0 Series, but until then, here’s a peek at a card I made with the original dies: Introducing Classic Road Legends.
