Sometimes the inspiration for a card comes from the most unexpected places. In this case, it came from a very stinky night at our house!
I’m playing along with the current Lawn Fawnatics Woodland Wonder Challenge, #228 and when I started thinking about woodland critters, I knew exactly which one I wanted to feature—a skunk!

A Very Stinky Inspiration
Here’s the story behind the card…
Our dog went outside to do her business last night, and unfortunately, she encountered a skunk. And, well…the skunk won.
After a midnight bath using hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and Dawn dish soap, she smelled much better. Unfortunately, the same couldn’t be said for our house. Even after cleaning everything up, there was still a lingering reminder of what had happened.
While this wasn’t our first rodeo with skunk spray, it was this pup’s first such experience. We can only hope that she learned something! There are few things that smell as horrific as skunk spray up close & personal.
Let’s just say that when I started thinking about the Woodland Wonder challenge, I knew I had to make a card featuring a skunk and a dog! And that’s how this card came to be!
A Stinky Woodland Scene

I created a little nighttime scene by starting with Lawn Fawn’s Spooky Forest Backdrop, cutting it from dark gray cardstock. I glued it onto a black panel which created the nighttime sky. I tucked a yellow ink-blended moon behind the tree branches.
Next, I die-cut all of the Pumpkin House pieces from white cardstock and then ink-blended each piece with Distress Oxide Inks in various shades. When the ink had had time to dry a bit, I used a white Gelly Roll Marker to add some highlights here and there. After assembling the house, I placed it front and center at the base of the card front.

I chose a skunk from Scent with Love Add-On, including his stinky scent trail and them with Ohuhu Alcohol Markers. I wanted the dog to look somewhat similar to ours, so I ended up using a wolf from Wolf Before and After. Since our dog is a cross between Border Collie and Treeing Walker Coonhound, this choice seemed to work the best.
A Sentiment Worthy of the Stench

Of course, the most important part of the card is the sentiment: “Sorry I was a stinker”. I pieced the words together using Make Lemonade stamp set and Scent with Love Add-On.
I mean, how could I resist?
It works perfectly with the skunk, but after our little nighttime adventure, it took on an entirely different meaning!
A Perfect Fit for the Woodland Critters Challenge
I love when a card challenge comes about so naturally, however, I could have done without our stinky experience! And while I certainly wouldn’t wish another skunk encounter on anyone, including our dog, I’m glad the experience at least gave me a good laugh and some inspiration for a card.
If you liked this skunk card, here’s another from a previous post: Misty Morning…
Thanks for stopping by and wish me luck that our house finally loses that lingering Eau de Skunk!
Until next time,
~Krista
