When I was a little girl, my mom sewed most of my clothes and I was always so excited when a new dress or outfit had pockets! It was a place where I could stash a new-found treasure, a tissue or keep my hands warm. I still love pockets on my skirts, pants, jackets and bathrobes! Please tell me that you relate! So, I couldn’t help myself while making today’s card, but to add a pocket!!
Making Tulips in a Pocket
The tulips are from Spellbinder’s February Club Crate and is an amazing combination of Press & Foil plus stenciling. I paired it with Essential Envelope Dies & it’s coordinating Add-On set. You can see another card made with these dies in this previous post.
To make the card, I started with a panel of white cardstock and foiled the From Ink to Petal plate using Skybright glimmer foil. Carrying on with the blue theme, I used the coordinating stencils and some water-based inks in light blue, navy and plum. By placing the foiled panel and stencils onto a sticky mat, I was able to ink blend the colors without anything shifting.

Choosing the Right Paper
Once the stenciling was finished, I cut out the tulip design with the pocket insert die from Essential Envelope. Afterwards, I set about to find some designer paper that would coordinate well. Once I finished browsing through my stash (this process can take waaayyy too much time!!), I settled on a navy pattern that has tiny light blue flowers sprinkled on it. I cut the pocket using the same set of dies and then quickly assembled it. As an added decorative element, I cut a scalloped trim from Breeze ColorWheel Cardstock using the Essential Envelope Everyday Add-On set. This was glued to the curved top edge of the pocket.
Next, I used Spring Stripes Embossing Folder to texture a background panel cut from Breeze ColorWheel Cardstock. I glued the finished pocket and insert onto this panel and then adhered it to a folded white card base.
The Sentiment: Easter Blessings for You
Finally, my card was ready for a sentiment, and I settled on using the “for you” dies from Essential Envelope. These were cut from white and light blue cardstock and placed in the bottom right corner of the pocket. Next, I used stamps from Ears to Spring stamp set for the “Easter Blessings” and “Hello”, which were stamped with navy blue ink.
I love how this card turned out–from the unexpected blue tulips to the wonderful pocket! As an afterthought, I should have added some stitching to this card as a tribute to my mom who has been gone now for almost two years. She was a fabulous seamstress and my very best friend. I miss her so much…
Until next time,
~Krista
