When I first saw this Spellbinders die set, January’s Die of the Month called Sunny Stems, I wasn’t sure about it. But once I started playing with it, arranging colors and assembling the flowers, I decided that it has many possibilities! Not only can the fan shaped background become the card base, but it is also sized to fit onto an A2 card base. Shaped cards make me happy, so that’s the direction I went for today’s card.
Using my handmade color swatch:
I began by pulling out my handmade ColorWheel Cardstock swatch, which is a 2″ x 4″ piece of every color. Each piece was corner punched and then placed onto a metal ring. This is truly the most valuable tool in my craft room, and I use it for every card I make. I used a label maker and added the color name to each piece, making identification easier.

I fanned out the swatch colors, looking for my inspiration, and decided on a pink and white theme, with soft touches of yellow on the flowers. The card base is cut twice from Merlot ColorWheel Cardstock and I hinged one panel by scoring horizontally about an inch from the top. (see photo) This 1 inch hinge is glued to the card front, making this a shaped card with an inside (or back) panel! So easy!

The fan was topped with sections that were cut from Blush, Tutu, Dahlia and Wild Berry ColorWheel Cardstock. I ended up with a bunch of left-over pieces that will be used on future cards-win, win!
I stamped a sentiment from Best Year Sentiments, which is the January Clear Stamp of the Month. It was stamped with VersaMark ink and set with white embossing powder. This is what the card looked like at this point…I almost left it as-is, since it’s quite lovely just like this! But I had to continue on and I’m so glad I did.

Adding the Sunny Stems:
When die-cutting the flowers for this card, it’s important to note that you need two of each with the exception of the one in the center. All of my flowers were cut from white cardstock and then gently ink blended with Spun Sugar, Kitsch Flamingo and Scattered Straw Distress Oxide Inks. After assembling the flowers, they were attached to stems that were cut from Rainforest and Fern ColorWheel Cardstock.

The final step was to adhere the Sunny Stems flowers across the background, and this is where the card really started to shine. My initial feelings of hesitancy concerning this die set instantly fell away and I knew I had to make more! I’m dreaming of all the possibilities 🙂 January clubs are open to new subscribers if you’re interested.
I hope you’re inspired to create something beautiful today!
Until next time,
~Krista
