Hello crafty friends! I hope each of you had a wonderful Christmas and are looking forward to ringing in the new year. I am certainly hoping for a better year, as my husband of 41 years has been fighting a rare cancer and we need some good news. We are praying for complete healing and the faith to move this mountain so that we can continue growing old together-for many more years. Which leads me to today’s card about “old age sass”!
I was recently asked by my dad’s friend to create a birthday card for his son who was turning 70. This friend, Jack, is 90 and doesn’t see or hear very well anymore, and he asked me to make sure the card had some “old age sass” because his son was “gittin’ up there”.
I knew instantly that I would turn to Riley & Co for that sass! Their Funny Bones line of stamps is full of humor, wit and sass and if you’ve never explored this line, I highly encourage you to check it out. You’ll be entertained for hours and chuckling out loud-I guarantee it! I own quite a few of these hilarious sentiments and recently added some more. (Because card making should always be sassy & fun!)

I wanted to make Jack’s son a card that reflected a personal interest and when he said his son liked to read, I knew it was a theme I could work with. I quickly turned to Spellbinder’s Storytime Gnomes stamps and Classic Tales Dies. These were part of the March 2024 Club Caboodle, and having a book theme, I knew they’d work for this card. I first shared these cute gnomes in my previous post “Using Mini Wax Seals...”
I used the Classic Tales Dies to cut out the books and trees & then quickly assembled them onto a 4.25″ x 5.5″ vanilla card base. The edges of the base were gently inked with Distress Oxide Ink, Tea Dye, to give it an aged appearance. After all, I was making a card filled with “old age sass”! LOL

I stamped the gnome with Memento Tuxedo Black ink and used the coordinating dies to cut him out. Coloring was done with Ohuhu Alcohol Markers in colors that coordinated with the die cut books.

The fun part of the card came from the sentiments, “Long Story Short” which is from the Storytime Gnome stamps and is placed onto the card front. On the inside panel, I stamped a Riley & Co sentiment which reads “You’re like, Really Old!”. Another sentiment from Storytime Gnome set says, “make this birthday one for the books”.

To complete the inside, I stamped a partial gnome in the bottom corner with no coloring and then some more distressing around the edges with Tea Dye ink. I always love making the inside of the card just as fun as the outside, and having the perfect sentiment really helps.
I hope you’ve enjoyed this card filled with “old age sass”! I also hope that you’ll take a few minutes and head over to Riley & Co to read their Funny Bones line-up. I promise, it’ll be worth your time 🙂
Until next time,
~Krista
