Salted Background Technique & Tutorial

Salted_technique-1

I was recently invited to be on the Creative Crew Design Team for SplitCoastStampers and I happily accepted the invitation.  Each month, design team members are given four challenges and one month to create and post our creations.  This card was for a technique/favorite color combo challenge where I chose to use Night of Navy, Calypso Coral, So Saffron and Pear Pizzazz as a background for some birthday balloons.  You can view the Creative Crew gallery here http://www.splitcoaststampers.com/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=20742

Salted Background Tutorial:

100_3486-1

On a 4″ x 5 1/4″ panel of watercolor paper, sponge background colors, starting with the lightest and working to the darkest. (So Saffron, Pear Pizzazz, Calypso Coral and Night of Navy)
Each color covers 1/4 of the panel.

Spritz your entire panel with water.

Lift the top of the panel up for a few seconds and allow some of the water to run downwards. Lay panel back down. It will want to curl up, so use a bone folder or tweezers to hold it down gently.

Sprinkle with salt. Table salt, kosher salt, rock salt. They all work. And for a little different look, try rice instead of salt. Set aside and allow to dry.
You can speed up the drying process by using a heat gun. When panel is completely dry, assemble card as desired.
