Fresh Fruit Box Card with Tutorial

I had a surprise visitor while I was working in my craft room last week.  My grandson Conner, who recently started kindergarten, stopped by with his mom, little brother and a box of candy bars to sell for a school fundraiser.  One week into kindergarten and they’ve already got these little kids out selling stuff.  (Seems a bit premature in my way of thinking.)

Anyway, he had only 3 bars left.  One was melted into soft goo, another was broken in half and the third was in perfect condition.  I could see that mom was tired and ready to be done, so I told Conner that I wanted to buy all three candy bars.  “How much money do I owe you Conner?” His answer was “$3.00 because they’re $2 a piece.”  Okay, so the math wasn’t adding up, but it gave mom and grandma a chance to teach some finger-counting math and he finally arrived at $6, which I then paid.  After which he grabbed the perfect, unbroken candy bar and asked if he could eat it.  Of course I said yes, but with the stipulation that he share it with his brother.

I never did find out what they were raising money for, but I am envisioning a future of candy bars, jerky sticks and cookie dough.  And to think that I just recently finished using all of the take & bake pizza coupons I bought when our own kids were fundraising!

Fresh Fruit Box Card with tutorial

Today’s card is a fun folding technique which creates a box that folds flat. You could use it to send small gifts like jewelry, a candy bar or money.  It lays flat for mailing and is A2 in size (4.25 x 5.50).

I fell in love with the vibrant colors in the Fruit Stand Designer Series Paper and had fun creating a variety of box cards with it, as shown in this next photo.

I used Tangerine Tango card stock for the box with the peaches (top left), Watermelon Wonder for the box with strawberries (top right) and Real Red with the floral/strawberry box (bottom front).  Ink colors I used are as follows:

Peaches- Peek-a-boo Peach with Tangerine Tango as the outline

Strawberries- Watermelon Wonder with Real Red as the outline

Leaves & stems- Pear Pizzazz with Garden Green as the outline

Let me show you how easy they are to make….

Follow along with my step by step tutorial below and you’ll be creating your own box cards, lickety split!

Place a piece of card stock measuring 8 1/2″ x 10″ on your scoring board with the 10″ side across the top.
Score at 2″, 3 1/2″, 6 1/2″ and 8″.

Rotate your card stock so that the 8 1/2″ side is at the top of the scoring board.
Score at 1 1/2″ and 7″.

Place your diagonal score board onto your “regular” scoring board. Place your card stock back onto it, with the 10″ side again at the top. Score from the 5″ mark down to the 6 1/2″ score line. (I marked this with a red line so you can see it better.)
Flip the panel over to the back side and repeat, creating a “V”.
Do the same thing on the other 10″ side.

Cut all 4 corners out on the score lines.

Cut on the score lines as shown by the red lines. (from the 2″ score line to the 3 1/2″ line & from the 8″ line to the 6 1/2″ line.) Do this on both sides to create 4 tabs.

You created 4 tabs in step 5. Now trim those tabs in a diagonal fashion as shown. This will help everything lay better when you glue the box together in step 8.

Fold on all score lines as shown.

Glue the 4 tabs to the inside of the box.

Press your box flat.

Cut 2 panels of decorate paper for the front of the box. These will measure 1 3/4″ x 5 1/4″.

Cut 1 panel for the inside of the box, measuring 2 3/4″ x 5 1/4″. If you wish to stamp anything on the inside panel, be sure to do so before adhering it. (Ask me how I know!!)

Use a 1″ x 8 1/2″ strip to create a belly band. Loosely wrap the strip around the flattened box, gluing the over-lapping edges together at the back. Be careful not to glue it “to” the box!

I used 3 layered ovals glued together and then glued to the belly band.

You have finished your box card!
