It’s a WOW card!!

Today I am sharing my take on the popular Pop & Twist card technique.  As you open this card, the accordion fold section pops up and twists into a vertical position, as you can see in the picture on the left.  It’s really quite impressive and a true “WOW” card.   That’s what everyone says when they open it.  “Wow!!”

Pop & Twist Carousel Birthday Card by Krista Thomas, www.regalstamping.com Here are the directions, step by step with pictures.  It’s not difficult if you take it slowly as you work through the process.  I had several brand new stampers in my technique class this past week, and they were all able to make this  advanced technique card.  Take it slow and I know you can do it!

Step 1:

You will need two pieces of card stock for the scoring/folding portion of this card. My examples are both shown in white, but for the carousel card shown above, you would use:

Very Vanilla measuring 8 1/2″ x 11″

On the 8 1/2″ side, score at 2 1/2″, 4 1/2″ and 6 1/2″

On the 11″ side, score at 4 1/4″, 5 1/2″ and 6 3/4″
I have drawn in the score lines just so that you can see them better. Do NOT draw yours in, as they will show when your card is assembled.

Step 2:

Cut away the 4 corner rectangles as shown and discard.

Now we need to create some diagonal folds. You will be bringing the right “arm” down towards the center and matching up the score lines, as shown by the red arrows. Press the fold down with a bone folder.  Keep the horizontal lines at a 90 degree angle to the vertical lines. I have highlighted the lines on the placemat in the background as a visual aid.

Now bring the left “arm” down in the same way, keeping that 90 degree angle, and matching up the fold lines as shown by the red markings. Press the fold with a bone folder.

You should now have an “X” scored into the center of your panel.  Make sure they are well creased.  Also be sure to crease the horizontal line (the one from arm to arm)

Bring the “arm” folds up into mountain folds and this should force the “X” into valley folds.  Bring the arms all the way in and flatten the card.  It should now look like a house. (see next picture)

Carefully fold your panel in until it looks like this. The more you fold and unfold, the easier it will go into place.

In order for this piece to fit properly inside the card (without hanging over the edge), you will need to cut off approximately 1/4″ across the bottom edges.  I have marked it with a red dotted line.  Do this now, through both layers.

Now let’s fold our Early Espresso piece that you scored in Step 1 (2 3/4″ x 11″) as shown.

Now we’re back to the other panel and getting ready to glue. Notice the two areas labeled “glue”. Don’t put any glue on them yet, this is just a visual aid for you.

Fold your panel back into the house shape,  as shown. You can see the two arms on the inside.  The accordion folded piece (Early Espresso) is going to slide between the two arms.  One arm will be under, the other will be over.

Place glue on the left arm and slide the Early Espresso piece inside and between the two arms, gluing it into place over that arm.

***Note that the accordion piece (Early Espresso) should have the 2 valley folds going in first, which means that the mountain fold (or center) and the 2 raw edges will be facing you.

Carefully turn the entire piece over and repeat Step 9, gluing the other arm to the opposite side of the Espresso piece.


Allow your glue to dry.

You should now be able to open your panel and see the Pop & Twist motion. The more you open/close it, the easier it will work.

Step 11:

Fold a 4 1/4″ x 11″ Bermuda Bay panel in half (score at 5 1/2″) to make the card base. Lay the Pop & Twist panel inside, glue one side to the card base. Turn over and glue the opposite side.

Open your finished card to determine which way is up.  This will tell you which side of the card is the front, and you can now decorate!

Watermelon Wonder (3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″)

Very Vanilla (3 1/4″ x 3 1/4″) Carousel is stamped with Early Espresso ink.

Pool Party (1″ x 4 1/4″) Sentiment is stamped with Early Espresso ink and notched with the Triple Banner Punch.
