This party panda is havin’ some birthday fun out in the barn and in January, my workshop attendees got to make this cute card. Here’s a picture when the door is on the other side.
There’s a small learning curve to assemble the sliding door and I promised to make a quick tutorial for those who bought the bundle. I finally have it ready to share and I hope it makes the process look as easy as it really is. The one thing you really have to have, are the mini dimensionals offered by Stampin’ Up.
Say good-bye to washers!
Stampin’ Up’s suggestion for building the sliding door is to use metal washers…the kind from the hardware store. You’d need 8 of them which makes for a heavy card, plus I found that the dimensionals didn’t want to stick to them very well. If you’d like to see an cheap alternative, keep reading. Here’s the tutorial from the beginning:
The framelit (above) makes the sliding channels and you’ll want to position it evenly from left to right, and closer to the bottom than the top. When cut it will look like this:
At this point you’ll want to stamp your desired images on a panel measuring 2 1/2” x 3 7/8”. Glue it between the channels created with the framelit. I skipped this step, but by doing it now, you won’t have to slide it under the door after it’s all assembled.
Here’s my alternative to the washers…
Use the largest flower in the Sliding Door Framelits and cut 8. I used black cardstock for contrast, but you can use white or whatever color suits you. They won’t show on your finished card.
Another alternative would be the largest circles from the Owl Builder punch or a 3/8” circle punch. The shape doesn’t have to be round because they don’t roll, they slide, so technically any small shape should work as long as they don’t show after adding the door. I cut two of these flowers out at a time and it took less than a minute.
Next, you’ll need those mini dimensionals that I mentioned before (and you can order them from me here). Place one dimensional on four of the flowers, as shown:
Next you’ll place the dimensional flowers behind the channels in the yellow panel. Two in the top channel and two in the bottom, as shown.
Now you’ll place the remaining four flowers over the dimensional flowers (be sure to remove the backing from the dimensionals first!!)
Slide the four sets of flowers out to the far ends of the channels, as shown below, and add another mini dimensional on top of each one.
Remove the paper backing from the dimensionals. You’re now ready for the barn door. I stamped mine with black ink on a Real Red panel and used a framelit from the Sliding Door set to cut it out.
Place the door over the dimensionals at one end of the panel, it doesn’t matter which end you start with. Just make sure it’s straight 🙂
And finally, slide the door to the opposite set of dimensionals until the door is just over them, press to adhere and your door is ready to go! The final step is the “hardware” which is created with framelits. Attach these to the door and glue the “rod” above the door so that it looks like the hardware is running on it. It is just an illusion, they are not really connected! Like this:
To attach this panel to your card base, you’ll need more dimensionals or some Foam Adhesive Strips. Place them along both sides of each channel, on the sides, and through the center, like this:
Attach to your card base and here’s the finished card!
